After receiving the positive HCG levels, we went for an ultrasound around 7 weeks, and a heartbeat was confirmed. We were so excited to see the heartbeat. I developed a significant subchorionic hematoma which was very nerve racking as it was so close to where the baby was and it was so big. I had to be placed on moderate bedrest to avoid any physical activity. This lasted through the first trimester, but we were very cautious and had a few additional ultrasounds to keep checking on the progress of the baby and the hematoma. I did not have any morning sickness or many symptoms that sometimes come with the first stage of pregnancy, I just found myself tired most of the time and the hormones were intense at times. I was continuing the progesterone injections until I was 12 weeks pregnant, and very relieved once we finished that stage.

Emotionally, we were cautiously optimistic and did our best to remain positive. The anxiety that evolves from these types of unforeseen obstacles is sometimes challenging. However, Melissa and I communicated a lot during this time. She attended every appointment, and we often found ourselves chatting about the near future of what’s to come, and what we were looking forward to each step of the way. We couldn’t believe we already made it this far into our journey and it went by so quickly. We waited some time to announce except for close family, but we wanted to make sure the little guy was doing well!
